South Australian Writers' Theatre
What is SAWT?
The South Australian Writers' Theatre Inc [SAWT] is a group of writers who specialise in the writing of scripts for stage and radio. The primary aim is to increase the quantity and improve the quality of South Australian writing for performance.
To become a Full Member of SAWT you need to have written a script or be working on a script, otherwise you join as an Associate Member. Concessions apply for the unemployed, students and pensioners.
SAWT has developed a process to assist its members to improve their scripts by means of "Cells". A Cell consists of two or three SAWT members who read the new script and give considered opinion on the work. The Cell members then meet with the Playwright to discuss their suggestions for further development. The Playwright reports on the progress of the Cell at a General Meeting.
The script, when at a suitable standard, is read to the members at a General Meeting. The feedback gained will inspire re-writes of the work and a workshop with a director and actors then follows.
During the year, public readings are presented (script-in-hand performances)at a Sunday with SAWT. The scripts used for these performances have been through the Cell process and have been re-written to present a high quality work-in-progress to the public. The public offers feedback on the work thereby giving further ideas and help to the writer.
